Fat Butcher - Stellenbosch - Winelands

Written by

Bistro fare, Burgers, Seafood, Steak, Vegetarian, Grills

Open since 2016, this steakhouse is situated in the picturesque centre of historical, leafy Stellenbosch in a beautifully restored building adjacent to one of the oldest museums in town. A display at the entrance foyer confirms the name – there’s a large array of meat cuts, mostly matured, with some sliced as thick as a brick of butter. All our beef is pasture reared and grainfed. The food is unique, the ambiance is warm and inviting.

1 Van Riebeeck Street, Stellenbosch  - Mondays - Sundays -12h00 -22h30

"As a consequence of our lacking antlers to sort matters out, mans competitive nature can lead to all manner of attempted besting between friends. One popular method is over a flame. Not by wrestling on a bonfire, but by outdoing your pal in the cooking of mans greatest culinary obsession: THE STEAK."

The Fat Butcher has cemented itself as a firm local favourite across the board over the past three years. In a town filled with great eateries and discerning diners with generous budgets, it’s only immaculate consistency and quality that will win this kind of loyalty.

It’s the ‘when in Rome’ philosophy here – you’re going to have to order a steak (but there are indeed other options on the large menu). For an economical option, try the ever-satisfying 300g sirloin from the Prime Cut menu section, or the Bella burger served with chips or your choice of vegetables or baked potato. All steaks are decadently served with roasted marrow on the bone and your choice of chips/veg/potato. Try more luxurious cuts from the Signature Steaks section like The Grosvenor – steak aux champignons (fillet with foraged mushrooms, Dijon mustard, sherry, white truffle oil, kataifi and black truffle), or the very popular côte de boeuf from the Dry Aged section.

All steaks are always cooked to perfection, and while management advises you to order it rare or medium rare, they will indeed cook it to your liking if you prefer otherwise (option of basting sauce or not). Sauces are available at an additional cost (the truffle mushroom is a winner), as well as delightful extras like wilted baby spinach, sweet-potato mash or a braaibroodjie. Vegetarian options are limited (hey, you’re at The Fat Butcher) but include salads, cauliflower soup and porcini or barley risotto.

The chunky in-house BBQ sauce comes standard on the tables and is a must-try on chips and burgers. Slices of freshly baked sour dough bread and butter are also served on wooden planks before all meals. A selection of desserts is available, as is a great kids’ menu.

DRINK WITH US

Since opening our doors in 2016, The Fat Butcher has proudly championed Stellenbosch wine and some of South Africa’s top local winemakers. From legends to emerging icons and wines from young pioneers; from heritage vineyards to award winners.

Easy drinking, classics, and innovative styles. All authentically expressing Stellenbosch. All are made from grapes grown here. Uncork Stellenbosch.

Cellar List

A meal without wine is like a day without sunshine. For an extensive list of all our cellar wines, please ask your waitron for the cellar list.

Zenzero - Clifton - Cape Town

Written by

Italian, Pizzas, Seafood, Mediterranean, Steak, Burgers, Vegetarian, Cocktails

Our beachfront live-fire restaurant with the most coveted terrace in Camps Bay, Zenzero offers family-friendly wood-fired fare from land and sea. Our open-plan woodfired ovens take centre stage in a cosy, ocean-facing eatery with indoor and terrace dining with a front-row seat to Camps Bay.Stage in a cosy, ocean-facing eatery with indoor and terrace dining with a front-row seat to Camps Bay.

Shop 2A, The Promenade, Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, Cape Town - Mon - Sun - 12h00 -23h00

What strikes you first as you step off the sidewalk into the newest restaurant on the Camps Bay strip is an immediate sense of warmth, from the hints of neo-classic styling in the décor, to the effusive greeting from the floor. Welcome to Zenzero, where the sense and the tastes of Italy, its flavours and style, come brilliantly to life.

This newest of beachfront venues, Zenzero is an 100-seater tucked between The Kove and that perennial favourite, Paranga. Diners will appreciate its spacious and elegant interior – the chandeliers, the plush sheen drapes which hang from ceiling to floor, the ornate mirrors, the richly upholstered chairs and wall-long divans in white or deep brown leather, interspersed with chairs covered in gold, cream and brown. Inviting for sure, comfort most certainly coming, but don’t sit down quite yet.

EAT WITH US

Zenzero, which in Italian translates directly as ‘ginger’, feels exactly that - a place to sit down in, and savour taste in, with zest. Sitting at your table, covered of course by a crisp and freshly laundered white tablecloth, you’ll get an immediate scent of two all-time favourites of Italian cuisine - rosemary and lavender. There’s a potted plant of either one or the other growing happily on each table. A quirky and inventive touch that reminds you why you’re here - great food. By the way, the herbs have a cousin at the entrance – a not insignificant olive tree you’ll have passed as you came in through the door. Nice touch, too.

The menu at Zenzero Restaurant features a range of classic Italian dishes, such as pizza, pasta, and seafood. The dishes are made with fresh and locally sourced ingredients, and the chefs are skilled at preparing each dish to perfection.

With the scent of herbs playing on your senses you’ll be reaching for the menu so here’s a heads-up. Apart from the homemade pastas (breads are homemade too) and a multitude of salads and tramezzenis, the chef recommends the fish carpaccio, the calamari, the butternut gnocchi and the spinach and risotto ravioli. Not forgetting the spaghetti with clams or truffle fettuccini. Or in winter, as a warm glow of a wall mounted fire lights the room, you might want something heartier, like the oxtail tagliatelli or T-bone steak Fiorentino. Each dish is made with the freshest ingredients meticulously sourced, and additive-free.

Hopefully you’ll go all the way before you head for home or back to the bar. In this event a classic tiramisu with rich mascarpone or a luscious praline and toffee panna cotta with butterscotch sauce will help you get there. As they say, Live life, taste Zenzero.

Winter Specialities

The perfect winter venue for a seaside dinner next to our wood-fired ovens, Zenzero’s winter menu brings winter specialties cooked with fire – from our braised lamb pizza to whole roast butternut, to our baked chicken pasta and seafood and chorizo stew.

DRINK WITH US

Instead make your way to the well-appointed bar. It’s a place you feel you can sit at well into the night, over a grappa or three, with a special friend, or many. Like most things Italian, more is merrier. So why not start with a Martini, or a Champagne Bellini? There are a dozen at least to choose from in an explosion of exotic flavours. How about a vodka, shaken, with muddled peach halves, fresh apple juice and squeezed lemon? That would get a lunch or dinner off to a very refreshing start.

Order your wine from the extensive list on offer and have it sent to your table. The choice is beyond plentiful. Chianti of course, wines from Montepulciano in Sienna, from the cellars of Lamberti and Zaccagnini, and a superb selection of the Cape’s finest reds, whites and sparklings to suit the most discerning palate, at a wide range of prices. Champagnes read like a who’s who too, from Louis Roederer to Dom Pérignon, Laurent-Perrier to Krug.

CELEBRATE WITH US

True to its roots, Zenzero rejoices in the festive and takes pride in full-flavoured flair - after all, isn’t it life itself that’s worth celebrating? The more the merrier, indeed.

Zenzero caters for all private functions including corporate, birthday parties, launches etc.
